Finnish telecommunications vendor Nokia has collaborated with T-Mobile to provide a communications gateway solution that supports LTE, 5G NSA, and 5G SA for fixed wireless high-speed Internet (HSI) traffic.
Nokia said it will introduce a multi-access gateway (MAG) solution that will “enable T-Mobile to improve service scalability and time to market.”
A Nokia spokesperson told technology publication Fierce Wireless that Nokia MAG supports a variety of deployment models, including software-only, hardware-only, and combined software and hardware approaches.
A T-Mobile spokesperson also told the publication that the company is rolling out combined hardware and software options.

Nokia claimed that the platform can scale the bandwidth of HSI traffic to several Tbps/second. Nokia added that expanding T-Mobile’s HSI service to more homes will benefit from higher bandwidth with less space and power.
Nokia MAG uses the 7750 Service Router (SR) to provide broadband services over fixed wireless access technology. It provides the flexibility of a 3GPP control plane architecture while combining the throughput and power savings of an NPU-assisted user plane architecture on the 7750 SR system.
Federico Guillén, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia, said: “Our MAG solution, using our advanced FP5 IP routing silicon, will help effectively enhance T-Mobile’s service capacity, scalability and speed to market.”
T-Mobile offers FWA HSI products to more than 4.2 million customers. The company aims to reach a goal of 7 million to 8 million customers by 2025.
Last month, telecommunications company AT&T announced it was bringing Ericsson into its Open RAN initiative.
Recently, Nokia and Ericsson made headlines last week after both companies announced financial difficulties.
Both Nordic vendors are enduring weak communications demand and face research and development risks. Berger Ekholm, CEO of Ericsson, said the company will cut 9,000 jobs, reducing the number of employees recorded in financial profit from 105,529 in December 2022 to 105,529 in December 2022. Light Reading newspaper reported that it was later revealed that the number had decreased to 99,952.
Meanwhile, Nokia plans to cut between 9,000 and 14,000 jobs by 2026 and cut annual costs by $867 million or $1.3 billion.
