Former India captain and Kolkata resident Sourav Ganguly has now chosen a different way to take his stand in response to criticism for downplaying the gravity of the horrific rape-murder case of Kolkata doctor Moumita Debnath. Slammed by many for calling the rape-murder case a “random incident”, Ganguly had on Saturday said that his remarks had been quoted out of context. Now, Ganguly has blacked out his remarks on social media platform ‘X’ in an apparent show of solidarity, further eliciting mixed reactions.

On Monday night, Ganguly changed his profile picture to black and added the hashtag, “new profile picture.” While Ganguly’s intention may have been to show solidarity and support for the victim and the ensuing investigation, not all users seemed to believe that.
Many have chosen to condemn the former India captain for such behaviour rather than addressing the issue directly.
Saurabh, how brazen of you to call this rape just a random incident and then post a profile picture of a black person?
shame on you !!

Dada, you have to speak out against what has happened.
It’s not just a symbolic gesture.— Fox (@DBdox) August 19, 2024
Some felt that Ganguly, who had so far maintained a neutral stance in his comments, had finally taken an appropriate stand on the issue.
Finally, he was brave enough to do what he did against Australia.
This is the Dada I know

Ganguly had earlier said his initial comments may have been misunderstood or misinterpreted.
“I said it last Sunday but I don’t know how it was interpreted. I have said it before, this is terrible. Now the CBI and police are investigating the matter. What has happened is extremely shameful,” Ganguly told reporters.
“The punishment must be such that no one will dare commit such a crime again. This is important. The punishment must be severe,” he added.
The responsibility of investigating the Kolkata doctor rape and murder case has now been handed over to two of the CBI’s top women investigators, who have handled several similar notorious cases before with considerable success. In overall charge is Sampat Meena, a 1994 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand who handled the Hathras rape and murder and Unnao rape cases. With her is Inspector Seema Pahuja, who was also part of the Hathras investigation team.
