5G continues to make gradual progress in Brazil, reaching 24.3 million accesses (9.4% of all mobile accesses) at the end of March, with two major providers accounting for the majority of the antenna and mobile infrastructure supply for these networks.
Sweden’s Ericsson and China’s Huawei together account for more than 98% of the 5G sites installed in the country, according to data presented by Anatel’s Sydney Azeredo Nins at a meeting of the regulator’s advisory committee on May 21.
According to Anatel, Ericsson leads the market with 53.6% of the total, followed by Huawei with 44.6%, with Nokia taking up the rest.
Nins reported that the agency has licensed 23,121 5G sites and deployed them in 758 cities.
However, according to Anatel’s interactive database of domestic mobile antennas, there are currently 21,954 5G wireless base stations installed in 831 municipalities across the country.
It also shows that TIM leads the coverage with 8,415 antennas, followed by Claro (7,509) and Telefônica Brasil (4,801).
This means that Ericsson has supplied around 11,800 5G antennas to mobile operators, Huawei more than 9,600 and Nokia around 400.
device
When it comes to regulator-approved 5G devices, the market is largely dominated by Asian brands.
The segment is led by Samsung, which has over 50 Anatel licensed devices, followed by Lenovo Motorola, Xiaomi, Apple and Realme.
The ranking of 5G devices is roughly in line with the overall smartphone market share in the country, which is dominated by Samsung.
At the time of Nins’ announcement, there were a total of 182 Anatel-certified 5G smartphones in the country.
Infovias
During the presentation, Nins also updated the launch schedule for the next Infovias (route) of the Norte Connectordo program, which will deploy a submarine fiber optic backbone in the rivers of the Amazon basin.
Infovias 02 and 04 have already been issued licenses by the Brazilian Navy but are awaiting approval from environmental watchdog Ibama. These permits have been applied for and are being analyzed by the environmental agency.
Infovia 03 is the most recent completed project. The launch lasted 18 days and ended on March 23rd.
Nins said launches of Infovius 02 and 04, if approved, are expected to take 29 days and 11 days, respectively.
