SK Telecom (SKT), in collaboration with Intel, has successfully developed a technology that can significantly reduce communication latency in 6G core networks.
The core network acts as the gateway for all voice and data traffic accessing the Internet from users’ mobile devices. As networks become more complex with 5G and 6G, communication delays within the core network increase, making it difficult to provide the speed and reliability required for advanced services such as AI.
New inline service mesh technology developed by SKT and Intel leverages Intel communication speed can be improved.
“This allows us to apply compute-intensive AI to the core network in more areas,” said Yu Takki, vice president and head of infrastructure technology at SKT.
SKT says it has already used a similar concept to reduce wireless resource usage by 40% and improve user connectivity by analyzing real-time movement patterns.
The companies estimate that this new technology will reduce latency and improve service efficiency for 6G core networks by 33%. This is essential to enable the high flexibility, security, and intelligence required for 6G services.
The technology is expected to be tested in commercial equipment by next year. SKT and Intel have worked together for more than a decade to develop key mobile communications technologies.
“Our research with SK Telecom continues to deliver innovations that are deployed around the world,” said Dan Rodriguez, corporate VP at Intel. “Using the latest Intel Xeon processors, we are delivering the performance and efficiency gains critical to future core networks.”
The two companies will continue to work together to incorporate AI technology to further improve traffic handling in the core network. This will help SKT maintain its leadership in his 6G network services.
