NTT Docomo and South Korean carrier SK Telecom (SKT) announced that they have jointly released two white papers on energy-efficient 5G mobile networks and related technologies, and requirements for future 6G networks.
The publication of the white paper is the first outcome of a basic agreement signed by NTT Docomo and SKT last November to explore opportunities for technical cooperation on 5G evolution and 6G next-generation communications infrastructure technologies.
Regarding energy-efficient 5G mobile networks, the white paper reviews:
Potential for further energy savings based on measured energy consumption levels at both companies’ respective base stations
Technical analysis of candidate energy-saving technologies, including both hardware and software
The role operators and equipment vendors should play to achieve greater energy savings, including the need for closer coordination
This document reviews the requirements and challenges for 6G, focusing on technical issues of particular importance to mobile operators, including specific performance levels and implementation scenarios.
Performance requirements and implementation scenarios for each frequency band considering the characteristics of each frequency
High frequency coverage and device issues
Standardization for transition to 6G architecture and application of cloud native/open architecture
NTT Docomo and SKT will continue to collaborate in various technical fields to improve the competitiveness and operational efficiency of 5G, and support global standardization and technology verification of 6G. It also plans to collaborate with global carriers on 6G standardization and research and development, with the goal of building a global ecosystem that encompasses advanced industries and technologies.
Yu Takki, Vice President and Head of Infrastructure Technology Office, SKT
This white paper is significant as it represents the first concrete results since we entered into a strategic partnership with NTT Docomo last year. Based on our experience and know-how in 5G, we will continue to collaborate with the world’s leading carriers such as NTT Docomo to evolve 5G towards 6G.
NTT Docomo Chief Technology Architect Takehiro Nakamura
As a result of our collaboration with SKT, which began in November 2022, we are pleased to jointly publish two white papers on green mobile networks and 6G requirements. We will continue to strengthen the cooperation between Asia’s two leading mobile carriers and promote great concepts and innovative technologies to the world for 6G deployment.
