Today, SaskTel announced it is adding 5G to 30 cellular sites serving rural areas and highways across the province. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses and families have connected to each other through the internet. 5G technology will give indigenous, rural and northern communities better access to connectivity with greater network capacity.
“Our government recognizes that rural Saskatchewan has always been the backbone of our province, and that rural residents and businesses continue to grow and prosper by relying on the access and access available to many of us living in urban centres. We recognize that we need access to the same cutting-edge technology that we have, and we have been recognized,” said Prince Albert-Northcote MLA Alana Ross.
SaskTel launched its 5G network in 2021 and currently provides 5G coverage to approximately 460 locations in Saskatchewan, including major cities, small and medium-sized communities, rural areas and resort areas, major highways, and First Nations communities.
“While 5G is still in its early stages, it is clear that this new technology has tremendous potential to transform the way Saskatchewan people and businesses interact with the world. From smart farms to local water management and more. From public safety to public safety, there are many ways 5G can drive development and prosperity across Saskatchewan,” explained Jeff McKeand, SaskTel customer service and operations director in Prince Albert.
SaskTel plans to invest more than $650 million to upgrade its entire wireless network to 5G technology, including connectivity to remaining rural, northern and First Nations communities without 5G. Includes sexual improvement.
