A total of 10 global tech companies, including Samsung Electronics, Nvidia, Arm and Microsoft, have entered into a partnership to advance 6G technology at Mobile World Congress 2024 (MWC 2024), Samsung announced on Monday. It is said that
This global network, called the AI-RAN Alliance, aims to integrate AI and 6G technologies. RAN stands for Radio Access Network.
This year’s MWC will be held for four days starting Monday at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via Convention Center in Spain.
The AI-RAN Alliance consists of three subgroups with different research and development (R&D) focuses: AI for RAN, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. AI for RAN focuses on leveraging AI and machine learning to maximize the efficiency of wireless communications in terms of frequency, cost, and energy. AI and RAN focuses on resource management and infrastructure when integrating AI into wireless communications. AI on RAN focuses on developing new AI-powered apps and services for wireless technologies.
According to Samsung Electronics, the research and development of both groups will greatly contribute to the standardization and commercialization of 6G and new services.
“We look forward to creating new changes by focusing on AI and 6G networks, innovating the way people interact with technology and creating new value,” Samsung said. Charlie Chan, head of Research’s advanced research and development team, said in a statement.
Samsung Research oversees the development of next-generation communications technology, AI robots, and healthcare. The center formed a 6G specialized unit in 2019 and held its first 6G forum in 2022.
The company’s 6G efforts were the first public comments of the year by Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who emphasized his “unwavering” commitment to communications technology when he visited the center last month.
