Last November, we noticed that Google’s “seamless updates” on its Pixel devices were starting to be much faster than before, and now it looks like Samsung is at least embracing the feature. This is an Android feature, also known as A/B System Update, that allows you to use your phone normally while the update installs in the background. After the March 2024 security patch update, a Galaxy A55 5G user saw this Android feature in action, which has been available for a while on his Pixel devices from Google.
Samsung Galaxy A55 5G comes with ‘seamless update’ feature before Galaxy S24 series
The Mobile Indian pointed out that while updating the Galaxy A55 5G, a two-step installation process – ‘Download and Install’ and ‘Verification’ – is now displayed. Interestingly, the company’s latest flagship lineup, the Galaxy S24, still requires users to restart the device and wait for updates to be installed on the phone.
On the other hand, mid-range products already utilize advanced methods to save users time and provide a better experience. The phone now installs updates in the background. After that, a simple reboot is required to complete the process. FYI, all other Samsung devices will currently see the One UI installation screen for a while. The Galaxy A55 5G reportedly completed updates faster than the Galaxy S24 Plus. In particular, the latter is equipped with a much faster SoC.
Maybe the Galaxy A55 was the first. Once the implementation of his A/B update to the system was completed, it was applied immediately. It remains to be seen how quickly users of other models (especially high-end ones) will be able to experience this new feature.
How do A/B updates actually work?
The concept of seamless updates relies on the existence of two system partitions. When a seamless update begins, new software will be installed on the inactive partition. Now, your phone will eventually need a reboot to migrate to the updated partition. You probably won’t need as much time as it takes to install updates.
Additionally, it was noted that these new A/B or seamless updates provide greater safety against installation errors. Essentially, a copy of your system is created during installation. You can revert to a previous version if necessary. However, the flip side is that it requires more system storage during the process.
