B.C. United said Tuesday that another candidate on British Columbia Conservative Leader John Rustad’s team has engaged in harmful, dangerous and bizarre conspiracy theories. Rachel Weber, the Conservative candidate in British Columbia’s Prince George-Mackenzie riding, has been found to be spreading a conspiracy theory on social media that claims 5G towers are “weapons of mass destruction” and are the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, Weber shared several Facebook posts, including one from the page “Stop 5G Genocide,” which claimed that “EMF+60GHz (5G) is a weapon!” Another post claimed that 5G “hinders the body’s ability to absorb oxygen,” which leads to the spread of coronavirus.
“Prince George Mackenzie candidate John Rustad’s views are nothing short of bizarre,” said Mike Bernier, BC Alliance member for Peace River South. “This is the sixth consecutive candidate to be accused by John Rustad’s team of extreme views and conspiracy theories. Mr Rustad must explain why he continues to recruit and promote a candidate who denies science and subscribes to bizarre theories from the darkest corners of the internet.”
Bernier said the posts remain up on Weber’s Facebook page despite the conspiracy theories having been thoroughly debunked. Rustad has previously fired four of his handpicked candidates: Jean Webb (Esquimalt-Colwood) for promoting the Devaney theory of spike protein shedding; Dr. Stephen Malthouse (Ladysmith-Oceanside) for saying a COVID-19 vaccination would make people magnetic; Damon Scrase (Courtenay-Comox) for a range of posts deemed anti-LGBTQ; and Alexandra Wright (Kelowna-Mission) for calling for the arrest of Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.
“These conspiracy theorists are the bedrock of John Rustad’s party. Do we really want people with these views in power? John Rustad’s party is not a conservative party, it’s a conspiracy party,” Bernier said.
