It will connect 75% of the remaining tunnels, ensuring all passengers have access to 5G service and 911 anywhere underground.
TORONTO, May 31, 2024 – Rogers Communications announced today that it is beginning the next phase of its cellular network buildout in the TTC subway system, expanding 5G service and access to 911 to all passengers using the remaining underground tunnels.
“We are excited to begin the next phase by building out our 5G network to connect the rest of the TTC subway system to all our riders,” said Ron MacKenzie, chief technology and information officer at Rogers. “As Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network provider, Rogers is proud to play a leading role and invest in providing world-class connectivity to Canada’s largest transit system.”
Construction began this week on the expansion of the tunnels between Kennedy and Warden stations on Line 2. Rogers is working with the TTC to expand the network in stages, connecting the remaining 36 kilometres of disconnected tunnels. To minimise disruption to passengers, work will take place during night and weekend construction hours.
Once complete, the modernized and expanded 5G network will provide seamless wireless coverage with mobile voice and data services in all 75 stations and tunnels across Toronto’s subway system, part of Rogers’ commitment to expanding connectivity for Torontonians.
“Today’s announcement marks an important milestone in the expansion of cellular coverage to the rest of Toronto’s subway system. Public transit riders and commuters deserve to travel safely to the TTC. Bringing 5G service to the unconnected tunnels will make a huge difference for public transit riders. I thank Mr. Rogers and the TTC for leading the construction,” said Toronto Mayor Olivia Chou.
“We are pleased that Rogers has begun the next phase of building out our 5G network in the TTC subway tunnels, starting with the Bloor-Danforth Line 2 tunnel between Warden and Kennedy,” said TTC Chairman Jamal Myers. “Improving 911 reporting for all our customers is a significant achievement that will enhance the safety of our passengers and TTC employees.”
In April 2023, Rogers acquired the TTC subway system’s cellular network from BAI Canada and committed to investing hundreds of millions of dollars to roll out 5G service and 911 access throughout the subway system. BAI’s aging 3G and 4G network only reached 25% of station platforms and concourses, and tunnels, and could not support the traffic of the major carriers’ customers.
Last August, Rogers rolled out 5G to its busiest areas of the TTC subway for its customers, and in October it opened up 5G service to all passengers in those areas. In December, the company completed its upgrade of its legacy network and launched 5G service to all passengers in all remaining stations and tunnels on the Vaughan Extension between Sheppard West and Vaughan.
This investment is part of Rogers’ ongoing commitment to providing the best network for Canadians. Through nationwide network investments, Rogers has built Canada’s largest and most reliable 5G network, currently covering more than 2,300 communities. In 2023, the company was named Canada’s best wireless network for the fifth consecutive year by umlaut, the global leader in independent network benchmarking.
