Roblox has announced a new AI model that can translate in-game chat messages in real time. It supports 16 languages including English, Japanese, Thai, and French to name a few.
Roblox, a platform that allows users to create, share, and play games and experiences, has built an AI model that can translate text chats in real time. The company says its “custom multilingual model” translates chat messages so quickly that users won’t even notice that the other person is typing in a different language.
AI-powered translation is nothing new, but Roblox says its new system has reduced latency to “approximately 100 milliseconds.” Apart from translating messages, the company has started developing a Transformers-based large-scale language model (LLM) that also recognizes in-game slang and abbreviations such as “obby,” “afk,” and “lol.”

Developed in-house, LLM supports 16 languages including English, Japanese, French, Polish, Vietnamese, Thai, and more, making it easy to translate between any pair of languages. Prohibited words and curse words will still be blocked, but users can see the original message by tapping the icon that appears to the right of the player’s name.
In an interview with The VergeRoblox CTO Dan Sterman said that given the scale of the project, it made sense to develop its own AI model rather than relying on a third-party solution.
He added that the company plans to use AI to replace banned words with banned words in the future and provide real-time speech translation capabilities. The company also appears to be working on automatic translation of text that appears on images, textures, and 3D models.
At last year’s developer conference, Roblox announced new tools that allow users to change the size, shape and texture of their avatars, as well as import their own 3D models and images.
