
US-based wireless technology developer Qualcomm on Thursday opened a state-of-the-art design center in Chennai. The ceremony, which was presided over by Ashwini Vaishnau, Minister of Railways, Telecom, Electronics and IT, and Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm, inaugurated the facility, which was established with an investment of Rs 177.27 million. The newly opened design center will specialize in pioneering wireless connectivity solutions, with a primary focus on complementing WiFi technology through innovative developments. This stands ready to significantly contribute to Qualcomm’s global research and development efforts in 5G cellular technology and reaffirms the company’s commitment to leading the wireless communications industry.
Promoting employment and the ‘Make in India’ initiative
Expected to create up to 1,600 job opportunities for skilled technical professionals, the launch of this design center is expected to further strengthen India’s dynamic workforce. This strategic investment is in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and promises to foster a strong indigenous design ecosystem.
Cristiano Amon emphasized the center’s pivotal role in advancing Qualcomm’s wireless products, especially WiFi technology. He highlighted that India’s thriving IT industry and growth-oriented policy ecosystem are favorable factors for developing technology talent.
Qualcomm’s 6G University Research India Program
In parallel with India’s Bharat 6G Vision, Qualcomm announced the first edition of the Qualcomm 6G University Research India Program. This initiative aims to strengthen academic research leadership in emerging 6G technologies. The program is an extension of Qualcomm’s existing university research efforts and supports selected professors from prestigious institutions such as IITs and IISc.
The first group of 17 scholars will receive a total of approximately $1.02 million in funding over three years. The program consists of two phases and includes research activities, regular exchanges, workshops, and lectures by Qualcomm R&D experts.
Promoting joint research and development
Minister Ashwini Vaishnau emphasized the importance of the private sector and academia working together on research and development in shaping the future of wireless technologies, including 6G. He praised Qualcomm’s efforts and said it will inspire and support India’s engineering talent in tackling tomorrow’s challenges.
The minister further revealed that he had discussed with Cristiano Ammon the possibility of cooperation between the Government of India and Qualcomm in various areas, including 6G technology.
