Picocom, a provider of 5G Open RAN baseband semiconductor and software solutions, has entered into a partnership with Wave Electronics, a developer and manufacturer of 5G base station equipment.
Through this partnership, Wave Electronics will integrate Picocom’s PC802 system-on-chip (SoC) into its Open RAN product, the WEH47-TM24B radio unit (O-RU).
Picocom and Wave Electronics will unveil a ready-to-deploy O-RU through an end-to-end live demonstration at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2024 (February 26-29, 2024).
Wave Electronics is demonstrating confidence in Picocom’s products by committing to leverage Picocom’s recently introduced PC805, an SoC designed for 5G small cell open RAN radio units. The decision highlights Wave Electronics’ forward-looking approach as it plans to incorporate his PC805 into its next-generation Open RAN products, scheduled for release in late 2024.
YJ Lee, CEO of Wave Electronics, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting the extensive groundwork that has been done in the partnership with Picocom. Mr. Lee highlighted the successful optimization and proof-of-concept of the PC802-based O-RU equipment, including interoperability and certification tests with private 5G network operators in South Korea.
Additionally, Wave Electronics is integrating Picocom’s latest PC805 device into its future product lineup, demonstrating the company’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to meet evolving market demands.
Peter Claydon, president of Picocom, said he was excited to showcase the new O-RU with PC802 devices at MWC 2024 and praised Wave Electronics’ accomplishments. Claydon also highlighted the enhanced capabilities and affirmed his Wave Electronics’ decision to seamlessly transition to PC805. Suitable for in-building and outdoor applications.
Looking ahead, YJ Lee shares Wave Electronics’ ambitious plans to begin deployment within the Korean private 5G market this year and further expand into global markets such as CBRS, in-building, and outdoor O-RU markets. I outlined the plan.
Wave Electronics has achieved significant milestones, including the development and completion of Fronthaul Multiplexer (FHM) certification, strengthening its ability to provide economically viable network configuration solutions to customers worldwide.
