“In today’s increasingly digital world, our networks and services are vital components of society and the economy, but we also believe we have an obligation to minimise our impact on the planet.
“We are committed to continually finding creative ways to improve energy efficiency and encourage sobriety, while ensuring the resilience of our network and locations.”
How to make mobile networks sustainable
Telecommunications operators like Orange are increasingly prioritizing energy efficiency in response to calls for global action on climate change.
Following the 2015 Paris Agreement, the telecommunications industry, which accounts for 2-3% of global energy consumption, is under pressure to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions.
According to McKinsey, companies can reduce energy costs by up to 30% by adopting a comprehensive approach that includes technology solutions, site and equipment optimization, and operational changes.
Orange is fully behind this approach, highlighting five key areas where operators should focus to drive greener outcomes:
- Radio Access Network (RAN)The RAN accounts for 70% of a telco’s energy usage and is the largest consumer of power for mobile operators.
- Replacing copper with fiber opticsMade from abundant silicon dioxide, fiber optic cables are much more environmentally friendly than copper, which causes significant environmental damage when extracted.
- The transition to 5GPhasing out older 3G networks will reduce energy consumption by 15% and allow for the introduction of more efficient technology.
- Reducing Scope 3 Emissions: Telecommunications companies can require suppliers to be carbon neutral or demonstrate strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments when bidding for contracts.
- Data Center OptimizationArtificial intelligence (AI) can significantly reduce energy usage in data centers: Google, for example, has reported saving 30% in data center energy through AI applications.
