Open Sesame: How to Find Wi-Fi Password on Windows and Mac

Managing passwords can be a real pain. You should never use the same password twice. Plus, you probably have so many accounts that you can’t remember exactly where each password is stored. If you didn’t write them all down in a safe place, you could be in big trouble if you suddenly lose your Wi-Fi password, for example.

The Wi-Fi password is usually printed on the back of your device. routerBut if that’s not the case, don’t worry: there’s another way to find the passwords to every Wi-Fi network you’ve ever connected to: they’re all on your computer somewhere.

If your Windows or Mac computer has connected to that network before, the Wi-Fi password is permanently stored in your settings. It might take a little digging, but all your passwords are stored there and can be shared with anyone who wants to connect to your Wi-Fi.

How to Find Your Wi-Fi Password on MacOS

Every password you type and save on your Mac is stored in Keychain Access, macOS’s password management system, including Wi-Fi network passwords.

First, open the Keychain Access app using the search function and then do the following:

1click system under System Keychain It’s in the sidebar.

2next, password It’s at the top of the window.

3Find the Wi-Fi network that requires a password and double-click it.

4lastly, Show Password Enter your password if prompted.

The password field will show you the password you used to log into that Wi-Fi network. You can double-click the password field to select the password and copy it to your clipboard if you want.

How to Find Your Wi-Fi Password on Windows

In Windows, it’s easy to find the password for the Wi-Fi network you’re currently connected to, but it takes a bit more work to get all your saved Wi-Fi passwords, so we’ll show you both ways below.

To find the password for the Wi-Fi network you’re currently connected to in Windows:

1Click on . start Press the button Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center (Windows 11) or setting > Network and Internet > situation > Network and Sharing Center (Windows 10).

2. next to connectionClick on your Wi-Fi network name, which is highlighted in blue.

3On the opened Wi-Fi status page, wireless Properties and, safety tab.

Windows makes it easy to find the password for the Wi-Fi network you’re currently connected to.

However, this is not the only way to find the password of a Wi-Fi network. The above method only allows you to see the password of the Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to, all Wi-Fi networks you’ve previously connected to on your Windows computer.

To find all your Wi-Fi network passwords in Windows:

1Right-click on . Windows An icon on the desktop taskbar.

2Click Windows Terminal (Administrator).

3Please enter netsh wlan show profile And hit input Click on your keyboard to see all the Wi-Fi networks you’ve connected to.

4When you find a Wi-Fi network for which you want to know the password, netsh wlan show profile “(Wi-Fi network name)” Key = Clear (for example, show netsh wlan profile “Netgear667” Key = Clear),and input key.

You can use Windows Terminal to find all your Wi-Fi network passwords.

You’ll see settings for Profile, Connection, Security, and Cost. Your Wi-Fi network password will be displayed next to Key Content under the Security settings. In addition to Windows Terminal, you can also use the Command Prompt application to enter the above command to find your Wi-Fi password.
