Tokyo, February 20, 2024 – (JCN Newswire) – NTT Docomo, Inc. and South Korea’s major telecommunications carrier SK Telecom (SKT) today summarized the technical outlook for base station equipment that utilizes virtualization technology, as the latest result of their ongoing technical cooperation. announced that they had jointly published a white paper.
This white paper outlines the future outlook for virtualized RAN (vRAN) base station equipment used by telecommunications operators, based on the companies’ combined experience in network construction and operations. This document provides an overview of expectations for base station equipment vendors, as well as technical insights aimed at carriers.
One of the two main themes of the white paper is the direction of technological advances essential to the deployment of vRAN base station equipment, which includes three future requirements:
– Improved processing power and reduced power consumption
– Early implementation of key virtualization features such as resource pooling, scaling, and auto-healing.
– Enhanced integration technologies and tools for vRAN base station equipment.
Another major theme of this paper focuses on accelerator technologies for signal processing required to implement vRAN base station equipment.
– Technical analysis of capacity, power consumption, and complexity for different accelerator structures and network architectures based on original research.
“This white paper represents an important milestone building on the strong collaboration between our two companies, building on last year’s joint publication on the White Paper on Green Mobile Networks and 6G Requirements. We continue to work with leading carriers to prepare for future network evolution.” Yu Takki, Vice President and Head of Infrastructure Technology Office, SKT, said:
Docomo and SKT signed a cooperation agreement in November 2022 to advance technological research on next-generation communication infrastructure for 5G evolution and 6G. In February 2023, the two companies jointly released his two white papers on power saving and related technologies for mobile networks and 6G requirements. 2
Docomo and SKT will continue to cooperate in technology in a variety of fields, including improving 5G competitiveness and operational efficiency, and 6G international standardization and technology verification, and share their knowledge and innovative technologies with the world. We aim for further development. 5G evolution and 6G mobile communication evolution.
