The request for comments focuses on non-spectral aspects of 6G development and timing.
The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has opened a formal public comment period seeking information on the current development status of the as-yet-unstandardized 6G wireless system to help guide agency policy decisions.
“6G will be the next step in the mobile revolution that has brought the internet to billions of people around the world,” said Alan Davidson, Under Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information and Administrator of NTIA. “While we’re still fully understanding the benefits of 5G, it’s not too early to start planning for 6G. We look forward to learning more about this next-generation technology and how we can take advantage of the innovations it will bring.”
However, the Request for Comments (RFC) does not cover 6G-related spectrum issues. Instead, NTIA is seeking input from industry, academia, and other experts on questions such as:
- the timing of 6G lab and field trials, commercial availability and what could accelerate the use of 6G rather than outdated technology.
- How the US government can ensure all segments of society can benefit from 6G
- Learn how 6G can improve network resilience during natural and man-made disasters that impact network performance and availability.
NTIA said comments collected through the RFC will be used to finalize the report and inform U.S. policy on 6G.
Comments must be submitted within 90 days of publication of the RFC in the Federal Register. More information can be found here.
