CTIA’s strategy calls for addressing the lack of private access to bands below 3 GHz.

January 18, 2024 – The Wireless Association, commonly known as CTIA, says the situation poses a threat to the country’s global 5G leadership as the U.S. grapples with obstacles to making additional spectrum available for commercial use. He expressed concern that this is happening.
CTIA on Wednesday announced a comprehensive action plan for U.S. spectrum policy.
He argued that 2024 must be a decisive year for U.S. policymakers to address challenges and meet rising consumer demands. The plan outlines key actions policymakers should take to foster innovation and growth in the nation’s wireless market.
CTIA’s strategy calls for resolving the current shortage of available spectrum by allowing commercial access to the lower 3 gigahertz band, which industry groups say is an improvement over the State Department’s completed 3 gigahertz band. It corrects “incorrect assumptions” made by previous government investigations into the issue. Defense in 2023.
The Pentagon argued in December that it cannot currently share spectrum in the 3GHz band because government systems would need to be moved to other frequencies.
Industry groups are proposing to accelerate the two-year timeline proposed by the Biden administration’s National Spectrum Strategy for studying frequencies for commercial use.
The spectrum plan outlined by the federal government directs the National Telecommunications and Information Administration to conduct a two-year study of 2,786 megahertz of spectrum and eventually make it available for commercial use. However, no immediate plans have been proposed to auction the spectrum.
CTIA plans to manage the public use of spectrum to help the U.S. maintain its dominance in the wireless industry. NTIA will develop a robust national spectrum strategy implementation plan that outlines clear goals for future spectrum auctions. It is necessary to make it public.
Another objective of CTIA’s call to action includes evaluating the 7/8 GHz band for more immediate commercial use. The plan also calls on Congress to restore the Federal Communications Commission’s spectrum auction authority and secure a spectrum pipeline for future 5G-specific spectrum auctions.
As the spectrum policy landscape rapidly evolves, decisions made in 2024 will have far-reaching implications for the country’s global standing in 5G technology, economic growth, and geopolitical influence.
