Nokia has signed a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement with Vivo, ending a years-long dispute over the Chinese smartphone maker’s use of the Finnish company’s patented 5G technology in its devices.
Nokia and Vivo’s patent license agreement ended in 2021, but Nokia filed lawsuits in a number of countries after they were unable to agree on a new agreement.
Monday’s agreement resolves all pending patent litigation between the parties in all jurisdictions and will result in Vivo receiving royalty payments along with catch-up payments, Nokia said.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Nokia said it would begin recognizing net revenue from the agreement in the first quarter of 2024.
“This is the sixth major smartphone patent licensing agreement we have entered into in the past 13 months, and we have nearly completed the smartphone license renewal cycle,” said Jenny Lucander, president of Nokia Technologies.
Similar agreements have been signed with Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Honor and Oppo.
Nokia continues to expect Nokia Technologies, which owns the Finnish communications equipment provider’s patent portfolio, to generate annual net sales of €1.4 billion to €1.5 billion ($1.51 billion to $1.62 billion) in the medium term. He said he was confident.
