- In a press release published on Monday, July 15, 2024, Nokia announced a new partnership with state-owned telecommunications operator Telecom Egypt to be the first to bring fifth-generation (5G) technology to Egypt in an effort to transform the country’s communications landscape by improving capacity and connectivity.
- The partnership will see the introduction of 5G-enabled services in Egyptian cities including Alexandria, Aswan, Cairo, Giza and Luxor.
- Through the collaboration, Nokia will provide 5G radio access network (RAN) equipment from its broad AirScale portfolio of massive MIMO radios, baseband, remote radio heads and services. Nokia plans to deploy the equipment in the second half of 2024.
The solutions, powered by Nokia’s energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, are expected to provide 5G capacity and coverage to Telecom Egypt’s customers.
Nokia assured that the new 5G technology will enable the North African country to enjoy numerous benefits, including improved internet connectivity, better network performance and increased capacity, especially in Egypt’s densely populated areas.
Nokia believes this advancement will unlock unprecedented innovation and efficiencies across industries, enabling more organizations to thrive in today’s rapidly changing digital environment.
Additionally, Nokia says it will offer a range of specialized services, from implementation to integration and network optimization.
Mohamed Al Fowey, vice president and chief technology officer at Telecom Egypt, said the new agreement with Nokia further strengthens the two companies’ long-standing partnership and reaffirms the national telecommunications company’s commitment to providing excellent digital services, positioning it at the forefront of the 5G revolution.
“Our consumer and business customers alike can look forward to enhanced mobile broadband and exciting new applications that take advantage of the speed and low latency of 5G technology,” he added.
In January 2024, Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) granted Telecom Egypt a 15-year license to operate 5G for $150 million, making the company the first mobile operator to receive a license in the country.
A few days before the license approval, the company announced a partnership with telecommunications wholesaler Zain Omantel International Company (ZOI) to develop new digital infrastructure and establish data transfer routes connecting Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Gulf.
Telecom Egypt, which has been providing retail telecommunications services for more than 50 years, reported a 48% increase in net profit for the first nine months of 2023.
