Espoo, Finland LONDON, Oct 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Nokia and A1 Austria (A1) today announced they have completed the industry’s first 5G edge cloud network slicing trial in collaboration with Microsoft. The deployment leveraged Nokia’s 5G edge slicing solution integrated with Microsoft Azure managed edge computing on A1’s commercial live network in Vienna, Austria. Edge cloud network slicing enables A1 to deliver enterprise cloud applications to mobile users over a high-capacity, secure and low-latency network.
During the trial, A1 demonstrated real-time HD video streaming by sending live camera feeds from multiple mobile devices using Multicasting.io’s streaming mobile platform running on Azure edge infrastructure. The 5G edge cloud network slicing solution can be used by enterprises and industries across a wide range of use cases, including retail, media, utilities, healthcare, and transportation. The solution offers opportunities to generate new revenue streams for mobile operators.
Nokia’s 5G edge slicing solution enables operators to leverage both slicing and edge cloud capabilities to deliver value to customers. Network slices can be customized to support specific customer use cases and different applications based on network performance, quality, traffic routing, latency and security. Nokia’s new solution enabled A1 to separate public internet and enterprise traffic while keeping critical business traffic local with 4G/5G core breakout for enterprise edge cloud applications. Network slices were implemented across device, RAN, transport, core and edge cloud applications. 5G edge slicing improved enterprise user experience for low latency and high bandwidth use cases, delivering high network performance, premium security and manageability.
Nokia’s solution also offers mobile broadband VPN sliced in specific business areas such as campus or urban environments. Scalable 5G edge slicing supports multiple enterprise VPN deployments using the same 4G/5G network. It is available on all 4G/5G devices including new URSP (UE Route Selection Policy) enabled multi-slice smartphones for various applications.
The trial was run with Azure supporting enterprise private and public applications at the operator and enterprise edge. Azure Managed Edge Computing was deployed in A1’s data center in Vienna, connecting to the Azure region in Austria.
A1 CEO Marcus Glautham said: “We are pleased to lead the industry in collaborating with Nokia and Microsoft Azure to deploy edge cloud network slicing. This innovative solution will enable A1 to provide secure, reliable and high-performance enterprise VPN services integrated with edge cloud applications over 4G/LTE and 5G networks. This collaboration will open up new business opportunities and deliver innovative services to our enterprise customers, while demonstrating our commitment to realizing the full potential of 5G technology.”
“Nokia is committed to delivering on this vision and is committed to delivering the best possible service to our customers,” said Tomi Uitto, president, Mobile Networks, Nokia. “This deployment with our partners A1 and Microsoft further demonstrates Nokia’s leadership in network slicing and our mission to help customers unlock greater 5G monetization opportunities.
