Düsseldorf, Germany – Today, the NGMN Alliance (NGMN) published “ITU-R Framework for IMT-2030: Review and Future Directions.” In this important publication, NGMN welcomes the recent report by ITU-R on the “Future Development Framework and Overall Goals of IMT for 2030 and Beyond”. This ITU-R report sets an important framework for future technology discussions towards 6G.
“Our publication highlights the importance of investment confidence in carriers to deliver tangible value to customers while ensuring the commercial sustainability of current and future networks. NGMN Alliance Board Member and Vodafone Group Research and Development Director Luke Ibbetson said. “The capabilities identified for IMT-2030 must be able to be deployed as needed, without compromising existing core connectivity services, and reflect customer needs to create new value.”
There is close alignment between NGMN’s 6G vision and the IMT-2030 framework. This close collaboration covers the vision, usage scenarios and essential features, particularly with regard to practical and sustainable deployment, and emphasizes harmonized global standards for mobile networks. NGMN will continue to provide recommendations and guidance on aspects of ITU-R as we move to the next stage of the IMT-2030 process, including:
- New capabilities must be introduced as needed without compromising existing core connectivity services that reflect customer needs and create new value.
- The evaluation should include the interaction of the IMT-2030 candidate with non-IMT systems.
- The importance of global standards for mobile networks within industry consensus-based standards bodies (such as 3GPP) is reinforced.
- It is believed that advanced features introduced in the IMT-2020 network and/or new air interfaces may be candidates for IMT-2030.
- New radio interfaces must demonstrate significant advantages over IMT-2020 in key metrics such as spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, overall energy consumption reduction, and cost benefits.
- Further research would be beneficial as an input to the process and next steps to understand the commercial imperatives for the extreme requirements of IMT-2030.
- IMT-2030 must continue to evolve based on IP communications, considering cloud-native solutions, isolation, service-based architectures, and ensuring both forward and backward compatibility. Self-organization support to manage complexity and emerging functionality.
“This publication provides a realistic assessment of IMT-2030 technology,” said Michael Irizarry, NGMN Alliance Board member and USCellular executive vice president and chief technology officer for engineering and information technology. says. “For the new IMT-2030 wireless technology to be widely adopted for 6G, it will need to demonstrate significant benefits across key metrics such as energy efficiency, traffic capacity, and cost savings.”
“We at NGMN look forward to our collaborative efforts with ITU-R and the subsequent stages of activity that will shape the future of IMT-2030,” said NGMN Alliance Board Member and General Manager of the China Institute for Mobility. Madam Yuhong Fan said. He added: “The industry will prioritize the development needs outlined by the NGMN on behalf of its operator members, actively participate in 6G research, contribute to new technologies, unlock innovative business opportunities and benefit society.” I hope that it will enable sustainable development of society for the sake of society.” our customers. ”
This latest publication follows NGMN’s publications “6G Position Statement, Operator Perspective,” “6G Use Cases and Analysis,” “6G Drivers and Vision,” and “6G Requirements and Design Considerations.” Analysis of the ITU-R Framework for IMT 2030 represents the next step towards guidance for E2E requirements for 6G.
