New Electronics – VTT explores new 6G-enabled network solutions

VTT has launched a satellite communications research project to develop new solutions for critical communications.

The project aims to improve communication between authorities in difficult situations such as during large forest fires, but satellite connectivity is also very important when it comes to maritime operations and remote mining areas.

Good connectivity is essential for seamless information flow between authorities. Data and situational information must be constantly circulating between, for example, border patrol, police, and fire agencies. However, there are many areas where the network does not work well or has no coverage at all, and a separate satellite phone or other satellite communication device is required.

Finland’s VTT Technology Research Center launched the project “6G-capable satellite-based machine type connectivity for demanding applications in remote locations” (6G-SatMTC), which was launched in April 2023 and currently includes: is progressing to the phase of . In addition to VTT and the University of Oulu, the research organizations involved include companies such as Nokia, Airbus, Keysight, ABB, Fairspectrum, Suomen Erillisverkot, Magister, Verkotan and Weir Minerals.

“The concept involves seamlessly integrating terrestrial and satellite networks. In the envisioned scenario, end-user devices such as sensors and mobile phones will primarily be connected to nearby bases when available. station. However, if a base station connection is not established, the device will automatically switch to a satellite connection if it is unavailable. This ensures that the network connection is consistent under all circumstances. It guarantees that there will be no interruptions,” says project coordinator Marco Whittier, VTT research professor.

The specific objective of this project is to support operations during large-scale bushfires, equipping firefighting personnel with real-time situational awareness and reliable communication capabilities. This simultaneously improves safety for first responders.

The project will also address communication challenges in offshore and remote mining areas.

“Satellites are always needed in maritime operations, as land-based networks do not fully reach the seas. However, the capabilities of old equipment are insufficient to meet the demands of digitalization. New technologies allow for smoother logistics and seafarers. could allow for better service to the population,” Whitiya continued.

This solution could also benefit healthcare, agriculture, and road logistics in areas where ground networks have poor performance.

“In the future, if satellite connectivity could be established directly through a mobile phone, people wouldn’t have to buy a separate device and the connection would work even while hiking in the wilderness. That would be a real game changer. ” Whittier added.

VTT has already interviewed the end users of this project (public authorities, mining and shipping companies) to identify their needs, which will be taken into account in the planning. At this stage, the test platform has already been defined, the simulation environment has been partially developed, and the global satellite system has been modeled.

“Keysight will support this project by providing advanced channel emulation capabilities to enable real-world modeling, development and evaluation of current 5G and future 6G standards. Combined with our strong capabilities in network emulation covering all new cellular technologies, including non-terrestrial networks, we continue to lead the development of satellite communications test solutions. Our collaboration with the 6G-SatMTC project allows us to develop new technologies, standards, As the use case is further developed, it will be possible to test the satellite network with simulated services before launching the operational network,” explains Janne Kolu, Director of Keysight’s Channel Emulation Center of Excellence in Oulu. did. Finland.

Preliminary simulation results are already available and the first scientific paper has been accepted. As more results accumulate, they will be tested on increasingly complex systems.

“Connections between end devices and satellites have great business potential for space data communications and space communications, as the number of users is expected to grow by millions in the coming years,” said Höyhtyä. Over time, new solutions may cause downtime.” Cost of existing services. ”

“At Nokia, we believe this project will create new possibilities for communication between devices and people. The developed technology will not only meet energy-efficient, secure and reliable communication requirements, but also It also addresses the real-time communication needs of mining operations.” “A next-generation solution. Integrating satellite communications into both 5G and future 6G systems will complement terrestrial networks and bring mobile technology to remote locations. ” says Ilkka Känsälä, Head of Nokia.

The project is funded through Business Finland’s 6G Bridge program, which promotes socially important 5G Advanced and 6G technologies in Finland. The program has a particular focus on technologies that can bring new business opportunities to Finland.

One of the aims of the project is compatibility with the European IRIS2 network and other international systems. The project will also support the strategic partnership between his VTT and the European Space Agency in the development of 5G and post-5G technologies. Funding for this project is extended until the end of October 2025.
