Gov. Phil Murphy and top administration officials plan to visit California next month to promote the Garden State’s AI industry to Silicon Valley and Hollywood, according to reports.
The trip begins April 11th after an AI conference at Princeton University, runs through April 17th, and concludes with a trip to Southern California to gain buy-in from the region’s film community. The business magazine “ROI-NJ” was the first to report on this travel plan.
Murphy was expected to reveal more details Tuesday afternoon during a keynote address at the New Jersey Business Summit & Expo in Atlantic City. Representatives from Murphy’s office could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning.
This comes in January as the latest effort to strengthen New Jersey’s sector, which Murphy called a “moonshot” project in his February budget speech.
In his speech, the governor said, “Our government’s goal is to bring together the top minds in government to become a catalyst to unleash breakthrough AI-powered innovation.” “Innovations that create jobs, not kill them. What is AI? What is it used for?
AI, or more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet and creates content (text, images, video, music) based on the user’s instructions, much like the human brain.
Its emergence means that people who are not computer scientists and don’t know how to write code can do things that users would take minutes, hours, or even days to do, such as replying to an email or writing a marketing brochure. At the forefront was OpenAi, a San Francisco-based company founded in 2015 to create a publicly available generative AI platform.
Its financial backers include Elon Musk, Amazon, and Microsoft. We have also deployed ChatGPT to generate text and DALL-E to generate digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.
Generative AI can be used for more mundane tasks that might otherwise take hours or days, and it facilitates data retrieval.
“This is transformational,” James Barlord, founder and CEO of Somerset-based AI consulting firm Innovation+, told the Gannett-affiliated Asbury Park Press.
However, this technology also has major drawbacks.

In December, Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber announced the creation of an AI hub at the Ivy League university. The plan would bring jobs and economic development while promoting the state’s AI industry.
New Jersey has an Artificial Intelligence Task Force charged with analyzing the potential social impacts and risks associated with artificial intelligence. The task force is also responsible for educating state officials and making recommendations to authorities.
Madison-based Fairleigh Dickinson University is sponsoring a contest for middle school and high school students around the world to create content using ChatGPT, a free AI system.
