MSI has equipped all X870E motherboards with a dedicated 8-pin power connector to complement the next-gen NVIDIA RTX 50 GPUs.
MSI Hopes to Provide Unlimited PCIe Power to NVIDIA’s Next-Gen RTX 50 GPUs Through the Use of a Dedicated 8-Pin Connector
Yesterday at Gamescom 2024, MSI showed off their upcoming MPG X870E Carbon WIFI Design, a high-end motherboard with a ton of great features, including 20-phase VRM delivery and a ton of IO ports including dual USB4 and dual 2.5/5.0 GbE LAN ports. The board also features an EZ slot and EZ release mechanism that makes it easy to install and remove M.2/PCIe devices.
Another interesting feature of this motherboard is the integration of a dedicated 8-pin power connector, which we also mentioned yesterday. This connector supplements the power demands of the Gen5 lanes that the motherboard is equipped with. We have received additional information from our source regarding the use of such an 8-pin connector in upcoming designs, and the answer is the next-generation NVIDIA RTX 50 series GPUs.
Many motherboard manufacturers, such as MSI and ASUS, plan to integrate a dedicated 8-pin power connector into their motherboards to scale the power requirements of NVIDIA’s next-generation RTX 50 GPUs. While these cards won’t be power hungry, having a multi-GPU solution, such as two RTX 40 or RTX 50 GPUs, will put a lot of strain on the PCIe lanes, which require more power in the current Gen5 generation.
Below is the complete list of MSI X870E and X870 motherboards that feature a dedicated 8-pin power connector.
- MEG X870E Godlike
- MPG X870E Carbon WIFI
- PRO X870-P WIFI
- MAG X870 Tomahawk WIFI
- X870E GAMING PLUS WIFI

So, MSI will be adding a dedicated 8-pin connector to all X870E motherboards, as well as some X870 designs like the MPG Carbon WIFI, MEG ACE, MEG GODLIKE, etc. Yes, the other two motherboards will also be part of the lineup, but they will be revealed at a later date, as the X870E series is scheduled to launch on September 30th.
Not only MSI, ASUS will also feature this dedicated 8-pin connector on their flagship X870E ROG Crosshair HERO, but it is the only motherboard that offers such a power delivery solution for Gen5 lanes and the upcoming NVIDIA RTX 50 multi-GPU AI operations. Other manufacturers like Gigabyte, ASRock, and Biostar also do not have such a connector on the boards they have shown so far, but that could change as the launch draws closer as there is still plenty of time.
