The law would prohibit data brokers from selling sensitive personal information of Americans to foreign adversaries.
Washington DC – House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone Jr. (D-NJ) today announced that after the House passed H.R. 7520, issued a joint statement. The 2024 Act Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversariesby a vote of 414-0:
“Today’s overwhelming vote sends a clear message that we will not allow our adversaries to undermine America’s national security and individual privacy by purchasing sensitive, personally identifying information about people from data brokers. HR 7520 is another important step to strengthen data protection and protect our country from foreign adversaries.
“This bill builds on our efforts to pass HR 7521 in the House of Representatives last week with overwhelming bipartisan support and is an important complement to a more comprehensive national data privacy law. We are encouraged by today’s strong vote and are committed to delivering this important bipartisan legislation and more comprehensive privacy legislation this Congress. This should help increase the momentum for its establishment.”
rogers and palrone introduced HR 7520 was introduced earlier this month by Innovation, Data and Commerce Subcommittee Chairman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), Subcommittee Ranking Member Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and co-sponsored by Representative Rick W. Allen (R-FL). Georgia) and Lori Trahan (D-Mass.). The bill passed the Energy and Commerce Committee on a unanimous 50-0 vote.
