PUTRAJAYA, Jan 30 — With 5G coverage in the country reaching 80.2 per cent as of Dec 31, the special committee overseeing 5G rollout has decided whether it is time to allow a second network. A ministerial memorandum to discuss and make decisions is scheduled to be prepared soon.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fazil said that a second 5G network will also determine whether a more sustainable deployment will be possible and will give telecom companies more opportunities to provide better services.

He said a special committee co-chaired by Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fawzi Mohd Isah and Finance Secretary Datuk Johan Mahmud Merikan met a few weeks ago and recommended several measures. A summary will be presented, he said.
“We announced on December 31st that the 5G network coverage reached 80.2%, so it is likely that the telco will establish a second network separately from Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) in the not too distant future. We will announce a decision on whether to allow it or not,” he told the media after the ministry’s monthly meeting here today.
Fahmi said the implementation of 5G will still be regulated by the Ministry of Communications as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is the regulatory body for the telecommunications sector and it concerns the spectrum and aspects covered by the Communications and Multimedia Act.
