Motorola has announced the 2024 versions of its affordable 5G phones, the Moto G Power 5G and Moto G. These are expected to go on sale in the US and Canada later this month or early next month.
Moto G Power 5G (2024)
The Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2024) has expanded its display to 6.7 inches (0.2 inches larger than the 2023 model), but it’s still an IPS LCD with FHD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. No OLED here. Both phones feature stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The camera is a pretty big improvement. The 50MP man’s camera now has optical image stabilization (OIS), and he also added his 8MP ultra-wide (118°), which also works as a macro camera (the 2023 model lacks his UW module) was). The front camera is equipped with his 16MP sensor.
The phone is powered by the Dimensity 7020 chipset, which is just a barely painted version of the Dimensity 930 used in last year’s G Power. On the plus side, the chip is paired with 8GB of RAM (up to 8GB additional virtual RAM) and comes with 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage.
The battery has definitely been upgraded as well. The 5,000mAh capacity remains the same, but the wired charging speed has been doubled to 30W, and Motorola has also included 15W wireless charging capability (a first for the Moto G family).
Moto G Power 5G will be available from March 22nd on U.S. carriers: T-Mobile, Metro, AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon, Straight Talk, Total, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible. The new G-Power will go on sale in Canada starting April 12th.
If you want an unlocked unit, it will be available starting March 29th at Motorola.com, Amazon US, and Best Buy US for a price of $300. Naturally, carriers have their own prices and deals for mobile phones.
Note that both new models feature NFC connectivity, which the 2023 model didn’t have. It also boots on Android 14 out of the box. Moto’s water-repellent design is maintained, although it doesn’t have proper water resistance yet. Some units are lined with vegan leather.
Moto G (2024)
The Moto G (2024) is Motorola’s first phone to use Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 (the 2023 model used Snapdragon 480+). This budget 5G model still only comes with 4GB of RAM (plus 4GB of additional virtual RAM), but this should definitely improve performance. Storage is 128GB and both phones have a microSD slot.
The display is pretty much the same as last year, a 6.6-inch LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate, but only in HD+ resolution. There are no major changes to the camera either, the main module now houses a 50MP sensor and comes with a dedicated macro camera. There is an 8MP selfie camera on the front.
The battery is also essentially unchanged, with a 5,000mAh capacity and 18W wired charging only (last year’s model was rated at 15W).
US carriers will be the first to offer the Moto G (2024). Starting March 21, it will be offered by T-Mobile and Metro. It will then be adopted by a wide range of carriers and MVNOs, including Cricket, AT&T, Boost Infinite, Boost Mobile, Verizon, Xfinity Mobile, US Cellular, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi, Optimum Mobile, Cox Mobile, Straight Talk, and Total. . , Simple Mobile, Tracfone, Walmart Family Mobile, and Visible.
Unlocked nit will be available in the US from Motorola.com, Amazon, and Best Buy starting May 2nd for $200. The phone will go on sale in Canada on May 2nd (via Motorola.ca), and then on local carriers.
