A man who set up his own Wi-Fi to avoid exorbitant charges and slow connections from providers has won huge government funding.
To address the lack of reliable broadband service from major providers, Jared Mauch of Michigan founded Washtenaw Fiber Properties LLC, a residential fiber internet provider. Did you just get $2.6 million? 217,021,113 rupees Funded by the government, his ISP aims to expand and reach more people.
In early January 2021, Mauch embarked on a journey to provide service from his ISP in about 30 rural homes.
And now the number of subscribers has almost doubled, reaching about 70 customers. Now, with the benefit of funding from the American Rescue Plan’s Coronavirus State and Local Financial Recovery Fund, Mauch aims to connect more than 600 facilities to his network.
The $71 million the U.S. government gave Washtenaw County for various infrastructure projects, including broadband enhancements, helped Mauch with his massive expansion plans.
Mauch then took a big step forward and bid on the entire project in his area, ultimately winning the bid through a competitive selection process. His ISP is one of his four chosen by the county to provide good internet access to different areas.
The expansion will expand his current 14-mile fiber optic network to 38 miles. But rural areas have their own challenges, and some homes require his half-mile additions, which cost more than $30,000.
Under these terms, Mauch will offer 100Mbps symmetric internet with unlimited data for an affordable $55 per month, and a 1Gbps plan with unlimited data will be available for $79 per month.
The project will be officially contracted in May 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
