MediaTek announced on June 26 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to collaborate on 6G technology research. The MoU signing ceremony took place during MediaTek Singapore’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
During the event, MediaTek Chairman MK Tsai, in a pre-recorded statement, committed to investing S$500 million in Singapore over the next five years. This was followed by MediaTek president and COO Joe Chen, who made the following statement:We are focused on further strengthening our research and development capabilities that will translate directly into next-generation SoC technologies. In the immediate pipeline, our teams in Singapore are working on future technologies such as TSMC’s 2nm process, 3DIC, chiplet integration and next-generation Wi-Fi 8 RF transceiver design. These newly developed engineering capabilities will enable MediaTek to explore new markets in computing, automotive and cloud AI in addition to our existing product leadership in smartphones. Today, a Memorandum of Understanding is signed between MediaTek and SUTD for research and development in 6G technologies. This collaboration will enable Singapore to expand its research and development efforts and contribute to standards development for next-generation 6G wireless communications.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by 400 MediaTek employees and 55 VIPs, including the Chairman of EDB, staff from the Taipei Representative Office, Chairman of SUTD, senior executives from A*STAR and its research institutes, university professors and MediaTek’s esteemed business partners.
Speaking after the signing of the MoU, Professor Poon Kok Kwang said: “This partnership between SUTD and MediaTek is important to Singapore’s efforts in building out its communications and connectivity capabilities, especially in 6G. This MoU is the first step in building a stronger relationship and we look forward to seeing MediaTek have a growing presence in Singapore for years to come.”
The MoU marks MediaTek’s first time establishing an advanced wireless technology collaboration in Singapore and its first 6G research and development technology investment in the country. The research is part of Singapore’s national 6G program, the Future Communications R&D Program (FCP), led by SUTD’s Professor Tony Quek. Despite its focus on 6G technology, the four-year program will also strengthen Singapore’s 5G ecosystem and accelerate the transition to future communications technologies. MediaTek is actively involved in global 6G technology research initiatives, preparing for 6G standardization within the 3GPP framework, scheduled to begin in 2025. This collaboration will enable Singapore’s research community to strengthen its involvement in 6G standardization activities and the global 6G ecosystem.
