Washington DC – Eastern Washington Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) today announced the next steps to protect America’s data and national security from foreign adversaries. On Thursday, March 7, the Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing titled “Legislation to Protect America’s Data and National Security from Foreign Adversaries.”
During the hearing, the committee will consider two bipartisan bills. The first bill is Act to protect Americans from regulatory applications by foreign adversaries (HR 7521) was introduced by a special committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) earlier today. The second is Laws that protect Americans’ data from foreign adversaries (HR 7520) was introduced by Chairman Rogers and Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.).
Chairman Rogers issued the following statement regarding HR 7521, the Protecting Americans from Regulatory Applications by Foreign Enemies Act.
“During a hearing with the TikTok CEO last year, it was discovered that a company had repeatedly lied about ByteDance and its ties to the Chinese Communist Party. It confirms our worst fears: that applications in the U.S. are exploiting and weaponizing Americans’ data, posing a clear national security threat to the United States. Holding this hearing to discuss bipartisan legislation that would take decisive action to prevent foreign adversaries such as the United States from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating American citizens through online applications like TikTok. I’m looking forward to it.”
Chairman Rogers also issued the following statement regarding HR 7520, the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act:
“Data brokers collect people’s sensitive data, sell or share it without their knowledge, and fail to keep it secure. They do this while denying people a say in what will be done to them, and often have no safeguards against foreign adversaries who use it for nefarious purposes. How data brokers share people’s sensitive information overseas I look forward to discussing bipartisan legislation that would limit this.”
Legislative hearings of the full committee are open to the public and the press. There will also be live streaming online at https://energycommerce.house.gov.
