Maxis said the agreement outlines several key initiatives, including the development of a private 5G network.
Malaysian telecommunications company Maxis and China Mobile International (CMI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote 5G and digital innovation in Malaysia.
The Malaysian telco said in a statement that the MOU establishes a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating 5G initiatives, leveraging the combined strengths of both parties, and fostering innovation and growth in the communications sector.
“We are pleased to collaborate with China Mobile International to accelerate the digitalisation efforts of Malaysian enterprises and the country’s digital ambitions. By combining our core strengths and expertise, we aim to develop market-fit 5G solutions that deeply understand the needs of enterprises and industries and showcase 5G’s potential to drive growth and efficiency in Malaysia and abroad,” said Goh Seow Eng, CEO of Maxis.
The agreement outlines several key initiatives, including the development of private 5G networks, 5G consulting and applications, smart park solutions, advancements in artificial intelligence, and joint research and development projects. The two companies will also focus on sharing technical expertise and exploring new market opportunities.
Maxis also highlighted that the agreement will create innovative digital solutions, enhance service offerings and accelerate the adoption of 5G technology in Malaysia and other markets.
Maxis also recently announced a partnership with Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies on a joint innovation centre focused on developing 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technologies to explore and develop innovative solutions that improve customer experience, operational efficiency and industry use cases.
Under the terms of the strategic partnership, Maxis and Huawei Malaysia will explore mobile network expansion and gigabit capacity to support 5G/5G-A technologies such as Mobile Edge Computing, Network Slicing, End-to-End Network Orchestration, RedCap, Passive IoT, etc. Additionally, Maxis and Huawei Malaysia will also explore the implementation of digitalization, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to optimize network operational efficiency.
Maxis’ collaboration with Chinese vendors also aims to ensure that Malaysian talent is equipped with the skills needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving communications and technology sector through a number of industry-academia collaborations, training programs and research and development projects.
Earlier this year, Maxis announced it had partnered with Huawei to successfully conduct the first 5G advanced technology trials in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
At the time, Maxis emphasized that the 5G-Advanced trials included live speed tests to demonstrate 5G-Advanced’s ability to deliver ultra-fast peak speeds of up to 8Gbps. Maxis said 5G-Advanced, which Huawei calls “5.5G,” will deliver up to 10 times improvements in speeds, connected devices and latency compared to current 5G networks.
The demo booth showcased interactive applications of the technology, including low-latency live streaming of different views of Kuala Lumpur city centre, live 3D content and immersive Augmented Reality (AR) experiences.
Maxis currently offers 5G services in Malaysia through the national 5G network Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB).
