ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) – Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced a data-driven plan he will use to help his administration meet its goals during a town hall with state officials Thursday.
Moore, the former president of the anti-poverty organization Robin Hood Foundation, describes the nonprofit as a data-driven organization and will use his experience using data as a tool in his previous job to guide his leadership as governor. He said he wanted to.
“This is going to be our guide,” said Moore, a Democrat. “It will show us exactly how we need to behave and ensure we have a core benchmark of what success looks like…and our processes. We can get the data to back it up.”
Moving forward from his State of the Union address the day before, Moore said he would accomplish four goals he had emphasized: improving public safety, making Maryland more affordable and competitive for business, and promoting public services. explained how data-oriented planning can help. .
The governor said he has 10 priorities to achieve that, with addressing child poverty at the top of the list. The plan calls for using data to help people access available tools to fight poverty, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Pell Grants.

“The reason we have to focus on true measurement of economic mobility and sustainable economic mobility is how generations of concentrated poverty impact any prospects we have as a nation. We’re watching to see if it continues,” Moore said.
Other priorities the governor focused on include education, the economy, jobs, safer communities, making housing more affordable, infrastructure improvements to better connect the state’s residents to opportunity, and the state’s health care. These included institutions, clean energy, and public services.
Moore said much of the framework for improving education has already been created based on the state’s blueprint for Maryland’s future. The state’s sweeping education reform bill would expand early childhood education, raise teacher pay and help struggling schools better prepare students for college and jobs. is focused on.
“We want to make sure that education is the path to long-term economic success and long-term competitiveness for our state. We need to use it,” Moore said. We can show that it’s working. ”
He also emphasized using data to strengthen accountability in costly K-12 funding legislation that will be phased in over the next few years.
“There has to be accountability in everything,” Moore said. “This can’t just be about the funding numbers. It’s not just the numbers that matter. We need accountability. We need transparency. ”
The Governor’s Office of Performance Improvement will continue to work to improve data availability, transparency, and use of data to drive decision-making, the Governor’s Office said in a news release. The Department plans to begin publishing progress on key performance indicators in early 2025.
