Regulator Rundfunk und Telekom Regels (RTR) awards 14 packages in the 3600MHz and 26GHz frequency range
The Austrian Telecoms Control Board has concluded its third auction of 5G frequencies covering the 26GHz (7 blocks) and 3600MHz (7 blocks) range, raising approximately 25 million euros. Auction proceeds for the 26 GHz band amounted to 16.2 million euros, and the 3600 MHz band frequency packages sold reached approximately 8.5 million euros.
Magenta Telecom is paying more than 10 million euros to acquire the mobile spectrum. Volker Rybowski, CTIO of Magenta Telekom, said: “We are very satisfied with the results and will continue to invest in Austria as a base, securing a national pioneer role in the best network.” .
He added: “The acquired national frequencies will ensure an optimal network for future generations. With the additional regional frequencies in Vienna and Carinthia, we are increasing the quality and performance of our 5G networks. Our customers will We are directly benefiting from this initiative.”
A total of 7 blocks of 200MHz each were allocated from the 26GHz range. The minimum bid per block was 1.9 million euros. This frequency can be used until December 31, 2046. The winning bidders were A1 Telekom, T-Mobile, and Hutchison. A1 acquired the two blocks for a total of approximately €4.6 million. T-Mobile he acquired two blocks for a total of approximately 4.6 million euros. Hutchison received 3 blocks for approximately 6.9 million euros.
In relation to coverage requirements, regulators for the first time allowed these frequencies to be turned off from midnight to 5 a.m., provided there is no reduction in performance compared to daytime operations.
Frequencies in the 3600MHz range are the remaining frequencies from the 5G Pioneer band allocation from 2019, but were not allocated in some regions due to lack of demand from regional providers. The regulator said they serve to quickly and easily connect end customers to network infrastructure.
There were seven blocks available, each with a different frequency configuration in seven different regions. The lowest bids for the seven blocks totaled €2,330,500. The winning bidders were A1 Telekom and T-Mobile. A1 Telekom he acquired frequencies in four regions for a total of approximately 2.6 million euros. T-Mobile he acquired frequencies in three regions for a total of approximately 5.9 million euros. The frequency can be used until December 31, 2039.
From a certain point, each frequency allocation holder is obligated to operate a certain number of locations using the frequency spectrum allocated in this procedure or to fulfill coverage obligations related to the allocation. Coverage obligations help ensure efficient use of frequencies. RTR said failure to comply could result in penalties. Frequency allocation typically takes place within a month of regulators publishing auction results.
