Lizzo claims she is quitting music because the constant backlash has become too much for the star to bear.
Lizzo may be on the mic forever. The singer announced that she is retiring from the music scene because she is constantly being harassed by critics on the internet.
Lizzo posted an emotional message on her Instagram Story on March 29th. In her post, she shared that the assault took a toll on her emotionally. Complex reshared a screenshot of her own words on Instagram.
“I’m tired of putting up with being dragged down by every single person in life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and make the world better than it was when I met it. All I can do is help you get a little better,” Rizzo wrote. “But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it. I’m constantly fighting against the lies that are made about me in search of influence and recognition… because of the way I look. I’m always the butt of jokes…I’m discriminated against and my name is disrespected by people who don’t know my personality.”
However, celebrities sent their love to the emotionally troubled star and encouraged him to continue pursuing his art.
Queen Latifah commented, “F that Do U,” the outlet reported.
LeToya Luckett added: “You are deeply loved.”
Lizzo has faced body shaming throughout her career. Even though her music promotes self-love, her backlash against the singer’s body and persona is too exposed.
But recently, she has been in the middle of a legal battle with former dancers who have accused her of fat shaming and sexual harassment. The lawsuit, filed in August 2023, details weight discrimination and forced participation in sexual activities faced by employees.
They allege that the singer fostered a hostile work environment, especially considering Lizzo advocates for body positivity and safe spaces for all. The suspicions were further amplified in December 2023 when a separate lawsuit was filed by a wardrobe designer on tour.
But Lizzo’s ongoing problems with online abuse predate the lawsuit. In May 2023, she slammed her hateful tweets about her body after a video of her performance went viral. She made her Twitter private to limit negative comments, according to San Diego Union-Tribune.
Despite Lizzo’s claims that she is quitting music, she has not made any further statements as to whether or not she is truly quitting.
