KPN, the leading Dutch telecommunications operator, has announced its 2023 results and outlined its strategic focus for the coming year in its recently published integrated annual report 2023: Connected Growth.Throughout the report, KPN highlighted the resiliency of its network to handle significant increases in data traffic and ensured that it is ready to support future demands. KPN worked with Glaspoort to expand its fiber footprint, reaching a record-breaking 725,000 homes in 2023 and boosting usage of the service by both existing and new customers.
According to KPN, the number of FTTH households reached 4.26 million in 2023, compared to 3.71 million in 2022 and 3.34 million in 2021.
KPN’s 5G-compatible sites reached 5,319 sites in 2023, compared to 5,072 sites in 2022, and 4,000 sites in 2021. Around the end of the year, average fixed broadband maximum download speeds reached 902Mbps in 2023, compared to 484Mbps in 2022 and 446Mbps in 2022, according to KPN.
KPN also achieved year-end download speeds for its 5G mobile network of 189 Mbps in 2023, compared to 189 Mbps in 2022 and 207 Mbps in 2021.
Energy consumption by KPN was 1.869 in 2023 and 2.156 in 2021, compared to 2.036 in 2022. The estimated energy consumption reduction by KPN customers reached 3.847 in 2023, compared to 6.588 and 3.455 in 2022.
KPN’s capital expenditures or capital expenditures amounted to EUR 1,248 million in 2023, compared to EUR 1,206 million in 2022 and EUR 1,216 million in 2021.
KPN recorded revenues of 5,448 million euros in 2023, compared to 5,315 million euros in 2022 and 5,255 million euros in 2021.
KPN’s fiber footprint currently covers 57% of the Netherlands and it is committed to connecting 80% of the country to fiber by 2026. At the same time, efforts are underway to phase out outdated networks and IT systems.
In addition, KPN’s mobile network site underwent a comprehensive upgrade and, in collaboration with other industry innovators, transitioned to innovative solutions that leverage this infrastructure. With an eye on his impending 3.5 GHz spectrum auction scheduled by summer 2024, KPN is preparing to leverage the capabilities of his 5G network.

From an environmental sustainability perspective, KPN actively pursues a greener future by prioritizing energy efficiency and circularity. The company helps its customers adopt sustainable practices through hybrid working, digitalization and smart solutions, primarily cloud-based.
Looking to the future, KPN envisions its customers accessing the Internet through a sustainable and efficient network powered by green energy. Plans include sourcing a significant portion of this energy from new wind farms off the coast of the Netherlands, with the aim of halving actual electricity consumption by 2030 compared to 2010 levels. That’s what I mean. Furthermore, KPN aims to achieve net-zero emissions in its value chain by 2040.
On the financial front, KPN reported capital expenditures of 1,248 million euros in 2023 and revenues totaling 5,448 million euros, an increase from the previous year.
KPN’s progress in 2023 was highlighted by key indicators such as the expansion of FTTH households to 4.26 million households, the increase in 5G-enabled sites to 5,319, and significant improvements in broadband and mobile network speeds. Additionally, efforts to reduce energy consumption have resulted in significant savings for both KPN and its customers.
