Santa Rosa, California, June 6, 2024–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Keysight Technologies (NYSE: KEYS) and Ericsson have collaborated to create a proof-of-concept for a pre-standard 6G network that will be showcased at the IEEE International Conference on Communications 2024. The demo, which will be presented at Ericsson’s booth #318, showcases a prototype 6G protocol stack using an Ericsson base station and emulated user equipment (UE) provided by Keysight.
Leveraging bandwidth and available spectrum, exploration of new frequency ranges for 6G wireless communication systems is underway. The use of higher spectrum will require overcoming several development challenges, including well-known obstacles associated with radio frequency (RF) propagation in these bands. Additionally, current 5G protocol stacks will need to be modified to support the wider bandwidths and higher carrier frequencies required for 6G applications, which have yet to be tested or deployed in the real world.
The demo is based on Ericsson’s pre-standard 6G concept, tailored for the new spectrum bands, and represents the first step towards validating the 6G protocol stack. A modified 5G stack was created using real hardware to establish a connection between the base station and an emulated UE. Starting with a simple digital interface, the teams worked together to test different aspects of the protocol within the context of a wider bandwidth, demonstrating the potential effectiveness of the stack.
Freddy Södergren, vice president and head of technology and strategy, Business Area Networks, Ericsson said: “As we are in the early stages of 6G development, we are focused on learning and exploring the transformative potential of future technologies. Exploring new frequency bands creates a collaborative environment where diverse players can come together to shape the future contours of connectivity and technological innovation, ensuring that such advanced technologies are seamlessly and sustainably integrated into our connected world.”
“Keysight’s 6G and Next Generation Technologies are committed to delivering unmatched performance for today’s market-leading 6G and next-generation applications,” said Giampaolo Tardioli, vice president of 6G and Next Generation Technologies at Keysight. “Working closely with Ericsson throughout the development process enabled both teams to quickly build a working link and demonstrate the feasibility of this technology. The learnings from this project are helping us ensure that our solutions are 6G ready and ready in time to enable our customers to be first to market.”
