One year after the launch of the major infrastructure project, the JT Group has announced that its programme to build a fifth-generation 5G mobile network in the Channel Islands has reached a crucial milestone as it enters the testing phase.
The company believes 5G technology promises unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency and massive connectivity, which will transform industries and transform communications. The company added that while its benefits are already being enjoyed in most major cities in Asia, the US and the UK, rigorous testing at various stages of deployment and operation is essential to realise its full potential in the Channel Islands. This will include lab test environments and real-world, everyday scenarios.
The 5G upgrade project, which will commence in 2023, involves mobile network modernization and upgrades to JT’s Radio Access Network (RAN), transport/transmission and core network infrastructure, as well as related network management and operations tools, and will also incorporate Ericsson’s advanced communications solutions, software and services, particularly the latest energy-efficient capabilities, to support a sustainable network evolution.
To support the rollout of its 5G network, JT Group has established a dedicated “state-of-the-art” test laboratory in Jersey – an isolated, controlled space that replicates the network’s production environment. The facility aims to enable engineers to test changes before implementation, ensuring network performance and reliability.
In parallel with this project, JT said it will continue to simplify, digitise and automate its processes, systems and customer-facing services to align with the needs of today’s consumers, businesses, homes and industries.
