Hsinchu, July 22, 2024 LONDON, June 11, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The 6G industry-academia research team organized by the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) recently demonstrated its advanced communications technology research and development capabilities and comprehensive B5G/6G supply chain technologies at the European Network Communications Conference and 6G Summit (2024 EuCNC & 6G Summit) held in Paris. At the summit, Colin Wilcock (fifth from the left in the front row), Chairman of the 6G-IA Council and leader of the EU’s 6G initiative, joined delegates to exchange insights on the latest 6G technology developments between Taiwan and Europe.
Based on the cooperation agreement signed with 6G-SANDBOX in 2023, ITRI and partners including Keysight, IS-Wireless and the University of Malaga demonstrated their innovative Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology. In addition, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), also a member of 6G-SANDBOX, ITRI exhibited its new Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) technology. The RIS technology leverages off-the-shelf O-RAN base stations that can detect human activity in communication networks, with ITRI providing the ISAC and RIS controller technology. Representatives from DG CONNECT and SNS JU offices who visited the booth were impressed with the cutting-edge application and ITRI’s contribution to this joint demonstration.
The team also hosted a special Taiwan session titled “Promoting EU-Taiwan 6G SNS Cooperation”, introducing the latest developments in 6G technology in the EU. Representatives from enterprises, academia and research institutes exchanged views. Taiwanese 6G prototype systems and advancements in non-terrestrial network (NTN) satellite communications applications.
“To deepen our collaboration with 6G-SANDBOX, this year we proposed using RIS applications to enhance mmWave coverage, and this proposal was accepted in the second public call for proposals from 6G-SANDBOX,” said Pang-An Ting, deputy director and general director of ITRI’s Information and Communications Research Institute. TaiwanThe Taiwan-developed smart reflective panel solution, which uses signal reflection technology, is designed to extend the signal coverage of base stations. The solution, which will be deployed in Malaga’s Constitution Square, is expected to solve the problem of signal reception in narrow alleys and reduce base station construction costs and energy consumption. The introduction of this RIS will encourage more Taiwanese industry, academia and research institutes to integrate into the 6G-SANDBOX experimental network.”
