iOS includes a feature that allows iPhones to use T-Mobile’s 5G standalone coverage in the US (in addition to other carriers around the world). This option leverages the power of carrier aggregation to deliver fast 3 Gbps speeds. Here’s how to make sure 5G Standalone is turned on on your iPhone and check your phone’s connection statistics.
T-Mobile officially launched its Ultra Capacity 5G SA network in November 2022, touting speeds of up to 3Gbps. However, only flagship Samsung smartphones were initially able to take advantage of the latest network advances, and T-Mobile said it would expand in the future.
iOS 16.4 added a toggle to iPhone settings to enable super fast speeds. His T-Mobile customers in the US must have 5G SA enabled by default. Uncarrier is currently the only intrastate provider with 5G SA. Claro and Vivo have also launched 5G SA for iPhone in Brazil. Meanwhile, this 5G flavor of his was previously available for iPhone in other countries.
As a refresher, T-Mobile says its Ultra Capacity 5G SA + Carrier Aggregation allows it to achieve speeds of 3Gbps by consolidating multiple channels in the mid-band 5G spectrum. However, it is currently unclear exactly which cities will have access to 5G SA through T-Mobile, so we’ll have to test it out to find out.
