Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization
Communications and Digitalization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has announced that plans are well advanced for the government to roll out a program to license additional satellite internet service providers to address the disruption in internet services in the country.
She said in a report on 3news.com that Starlink, a global satellite internet service provider, is in the process of obtaining the necessary licenses to operate in Ghana.
During a parliamentary briefing on the internet outage (March 18, 2024), Owusu-Ekuful stressed that it would take at least five weeks to repair the damaged undersea cables that caused the outage.
She stressed the importance of licensing Starlink and encouraging other carriers to establish a presence in Ghana.
“Starlink is currently in the process of obtaining a license. And other carriers are also being encouraged to land in Ghana. We are also looking into the operation of RASCOM (African Regional Satellite Company), rather than each country going it alone. You have to invest.
“All network operators should arrange and implement alternative routes to restore phone services as they are currently doing,” she said.
