Even as the global 5G ecosystem continues to grow and the technology emerges as a growth engine for service providers, the industry is still in the early stages of realizing the technology’s huge potential, says Huawei. Chairman Ken Hu said. Keynote address at the Global Mobile His Broadband Forum 2023 held in Dubai.
The event, themed “Making 5.5G a reality,” was attended by several prominent service providers and other industry players from all regions and regions.
Ken Hu pointed out that there are currently about 260 5G networks in different regions, covering almost half of the world’s population. Over the past four years, the industry has delivered 1.5 billion 5G connections, contributing to a 10% to 25% increase in carriers’ ARPU in some markets. According to GSMA, 5G could reach 5.2 billion connections by 2035.
“5G comes with new capabilities that will enable access for carriers in the B2B market. There are several use cases in different industries, so the industry is currently looking at building capabilities for companies in the enterprise segment. 5G will help change the world,” said Ken Hu.
He identified ports, mining and manufacturing industries where the industry can commercially scale up 5G capabilities. Consumers prefer 5G because of the superior experience offered by 5G’s high speeds and low latency, but the industry needs 5G as it opens up new use cases and business models. .
“As the 5G ecosystem matures, we are working to accelerate the use of data and enhance the network experience to deliver more coverage and more applications so that service providers can maximize their return on investment.” There is a lot to do,” said Ken Hu. “5G is a great opportunity for service providers to go beyond just connectivity and build new capabilities,” he added.
Ken Hu was joined by GSMA Director-General Mats Granryd, who said 5G has been on a roll for the past four years, and the momentum is likely to continue over the next few years. “By 2030, we believe there will be 5.2 billion 5G subscribers worldwide. Also, by 2030, the global economy will increase by about $1 trillion per year…We believe that there will be 5.2 billion 5G subscribers worldwide. “We are very bullish about 5G,” said Mats Granrid.
“With approximately 1.5 billion 5G connections, 5G is the world’s fastest wireless revolution. While initial 5G deployments have focused on the consumer segment, the enterprise segment represents the biggest opportunity for 5G,” said GSMA Highest. said Alex Sinclair, Technical Director.
Monetize your 5G investment
One of the more likely 5G use cases is fixed wireless access (FWA). Karim Benkirane, CCO at du, emphasized that 5G-enabled FWA has the potential to provide an even better experience than fiber in the future. 5G accounts for 60% of total traffic, and this is likely to increase as coverage expands. A better indoor 5G experience requires his FWA, which will help monetize his 5G faster.
However, a key challenge in FWA growth is separating FWA traffic from mobile traffic. “5G Advanced will help us deliver even better speeds and his FWA experience, which will also help us grow the small business market,” he said.
Sean Collins, Executive Chairman of CCS Insights, also highlighted the growing relevance of FWA. “Two years ago, FWA was just a note on a slide. But it is growing and now has huge growth potential. 5G is going to dominate for the next six to seven years. Cooperation and partnership between stakeholders will help carriers realize the potential of 5G.”
Telcos must continue to invest in their networks to maximize return on investment. “Currently, 5G coverage in the country is 99%. We have continued to invest in our network to ensure the best network experience and coverage to differentiate ourselves from other players. ,” said Bruce Lam, CEO, Consumer Division, Hong Kong Telecommunications.
A key point in the development of 5G is the timely adoption of 5G Advanced, which serves as a bridge between 5G and 6G. 6G may only launch around 2030, but service providers will need 5G Advanced to meet their growing needs for speed and capacity. “5G Advanced is the natural evolution of his 5G. At Huawei, we are ready for the large-scale deployment of 5G Advanced to help service providers better address the challenges.” Huawei’s Corporate Senior Vice President said Li Peng, president of Career BG.
