New Delhi, Aug 24 (PTI) Indian telecom companies are targeting a 10 per cent share of total 6G patents and one-sixth contribution to global standards over the next three years, an official statement said on Saturday.
Telecom industry players have suggested systematically aligning research to “Indian needs” and setting up a vibrant “standards community.”
The proposal was taken up at the second meeting of the Stakeholders Advisory Committee (SAC) on Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), chaired by Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday.
“Industry leaders proposed to systematically align research to ‘Indian needs’ and set up a vibrant ‘standards community’ that targets 10 per cent of total 6G patents and one-sixth contribution to global standards over the next three years,” the statement said.
The first SAC on carriers identified certain areas of focus.
The meeting discussed international standards, India’s share in intellectual property and standard essential patents (SEPs), telecom connectivity gap and quality of telecom services.
“India has already taken various initiatives such as launching the Bhart6G Vision and Bhart6G Alliance, patent and IPR support framework and commissioning of testbeds, and can aim to achieve 10% of total 6G patents furthering Indian needs and one-sixth contribution to global standards. SAC has proposed a three-year roadmap to achieve it,” the statement said.
SAC emphasised that India will be a leader in Deep Tech and promote widespread adoption of both wired and intelligent wireless broadband networks with reliable connectivity.
“Minister Scindia asked the SAC members to define the key pathways for achieving the objectives discussed and the role to be played by various stakeholders, including the government, in achieving them. He also urged the TSPs to take all necessary steps to ensure that citizens receive quality telecommunication services,” the statement said.
The meeting was attended by Reliance Jio Managing Director Pankaj Pawar, Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Robert J Ravi, Tejas Networks Chairman of the Board NG Subramaniam and industry body COAI Secretary General SP Kochhar.
