We’re still in the early 5G era, but Samsung is already working to solve problems that could make the rollout of 6G much more difficult.
Samsung Research, the research and development arm of the South Korean technology giant, has partnered with Arm to develop technology to address Parallel Packet Processing (PPP) technology in 6G networks. PPP is a technology that improves data throughput on networks, allowing networks to process more data more efficiently. As part of the collaboration, Samsung and Arm’s efforts will be open-sourced to give the broader technology community access to research and work on improving PPP.
I also demoed all the new AI features coming to Copilot+ PC and the hype was mostly justified.
“The collaboration between Samsung and Arm aims to significantly accelerate research and development schedules in preparation for the rapid data growth that will come with 6G,” the company said in a statement.
While the majority of wireless users across the U.S. are currently on 5G networks, the future is undoubtedly 6G. This next-generation technology, which some experts say could be deployed by 2030, promises speeds of up to 1Tbps and improved coverage, making it a contender, if not a replacement, for home networks.
But 6G also comes with many challenges. With an ever-increasing number of devices coming to market, 6G networks will be faced with much larger data throughput than ever before. And with artificial intelligence now playing a larger role in nearly every aspect of industry, better technology will be needed to keep up with AI’s massive data and power requirements.
“AI is fueling demand for next-generation technologies like 6G, but insatiable data volumes are making power-efficient processing essential,” said Mohammed Awad, senior vice president and general manager of Arm’s infrastructure business unit. Awad added that the Samsung-Arm partnership will help “ensure that AI infrastructure runs as efficiently as possible.”
Also, what is the status of 6G and when will it arrive? Here are some points to keep an eye on:
Looking ahead, it’s unclear whether Samsung and Arm have set any target milestones, and the companies declined to say when they expect to see progress on PPP improvements, but with 6G still years away from becoming a reality, the companies still have plenty of time to come up with a solution—and to prepare wireless networks for the onslaught of AI data.
