AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Are you paying a high monthly fee for internet service but still struggling with frustratingly slow speeds?
Don’t settle for substandard streaming or glitchy games.
If your internet isn’t delivering the speed you expect, it’s time to fix the problem.
Through television commercials, we are led to believe that everyone needs the fastest internet service in their home, and a 1 gig internet package can cost over $100 a month.
The truth is, not everyone needs 1Gb speeds. If you’re just streaming Netflix or Prime on one TV, a 300Mb package will probably be enough. To reach speeds above 300Mb, you’ll need a large number of devices using the same internet connection.
If you frequently see buffering animations on your screen, there are a few things you should check before shelling out another $20-50 for faster speeds.
Check your Internet connection
First, go to speedtest.org or speedtest.net to measure your internet speed.
First, test a computer that is connected directly to your Internet gateway via an Ethernet cable.
An Ethernet connection is a lot like the old telephone connection that connects a landline phone, but it’s a bit larger. Your internet installer may have connected the cable to your computer.
If not, this can easily be achieved by simply plugging an Ethernet cable into one of the ports on your Internet Gateway, and the result should roughly match the speeds you’re paying for.
Next, test your speeds with a mobile device connected to your Wi-Fi network – you can expect slightly slower speeds here.
If you’re experiencing buffering on your TV, check the speed in that room as well.
Upgrade your router
If your device is experiencing speeds significantly slower than your plan suggests, your router may be to blame.
If it’s outdated, it’s time to invest in a Wi-Fi 6 router.
Place it in the center of your home and adjust the antenna for optimal coverage.
Optimize your connection
If your Wi-Fi connection is still slow, try connecting your device directly to your router using an Ethernet cable.
For devices where this isn’t feasible, consider using a Wi-Fi extender to boost the signal. Place the extender between your router and the slow device.
The WiFi signal reaches the extender, which repeats the stronger signal.
Consider a mesh system
If you have a large home or areas with Wi-Fi dead zones, a mesh system can make a big difference.
These systems distribute multiple transmitters throughout the home to ensure consistent coverage.
For best performance, connect your device to the closest transmitter, and once connected, it should always connect to the nearest mesh transmitter.
Contact your provider
If you have tried these steps and your internet speed is still substandard, don’t hesitate to contact your internet service provider.
They can help identify underlying issues and ensure you get the service you deserve for what you pay for.
Remember: fast, reliable internet is essential in today’s connected world.
Don’t let slow speeds stop you from making the most of your online experience.
With a little troubleshooting and optimization, you can achieve the internet speed you expect.
