The data consumption of 5G in India is about four times that of 4G, the report said, adding that fifth generation communication technology has emerged as a catalyst for growth in data usage.
According to the Nokia Mobile Broadband Index report, since its launch in October 2022, 5G users have used approximately 3.6 times more mobile data traffic compared to 4G. He added that in 2023, 15% of all data traffic will contribute to his 5G.
According to findings from Nokia’s annual Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) focused on the Indian market, users will consume 17.4 exabytes per month in 2023, at a CAGR of 26% over the past five years. The launch of 5G has emerged as a key catalyst for increased data usage.
“What is immediately clear is the incredible uptake of 5G technology across India, driving demand for ultra-fast 5G data speeds,” said Tarun Chhabra, Head of Mobile Networks Business, Nokia (India). He says:
5G technology adoption expands in India The report also highlights the paradigm shift in India’s mobile data landscape with the growing adoption of 5G technology.
“5G traffic has shown significant growth in all communication circles, with metro circles leading the way, reaching a 20% share of total mobile data traffic,” the report said.
Factors driving growthThe report points out multiple factors that will accelerate the growth of 5G in India. These include enhanced 5G availability and performance, availability of a wide range of affordable devices, and the introduction of new data-intensive apps and services.
“Average monthly data traffic per user also increased by 24% year-on-year in 2023, reaching 24.1GB per user per month,” the report said. Additionally, about 17% of active 4G devices, or 134 million out of 796 million, are 5G-enabled.
Furthermore, the rise of 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) is also said to be a key enabler of new services for both homes and businesses. According to reports, an FWA user is expected to consume an estimated 2.5 times more data than the average 5G user.
