The Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has confirmed that 5G network services will be launched in Ghana from September 2024.
The minister appeared as a guest on Peace FM’s Kokrokhu morning show on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, when host Kwame Sefa Kayi asked when fifth generation mobile network services will be available to Ghanaian consumers. When asked about this, he answered emphatically. .
“Ghana is scheduled to get 5G internet connectivity in September 2024,” she stressed.
5G succeeds the previous generations 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G. It represents the latest advancement in wireless technology, delivering significantly faster data speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity compared to previous generations.
Ghana currently has 4G, but it is considered slow and outdated considering current technological advancements.
The minister’s approval comes in the wake of recent cuts to internet services in Ghana and several other West African states.
According to the National Communications Authority (NCA), the incident was the result of several seismic activities that led to the cutting of undersea fiber optic cables supplying the internet to West Africa.
The NCA says it will take at least five weeks to fix the issue. Meanwhile, service providers such as telecommunication networks are switching to alternative sources to provide more stable networks to their customers.
