At the 47th Annual General Meeting of Reliance Industries, Chairman Mukesh Ambani provided a detailed overview of Reliance Jio’s significant technological advancements over the past year. His address highlighted Jio’s innovation efforts and the company’s role in transforming India’s digital landscape.
Ambani announced the completion of the Jio True 5G rollout across India, describing it as the largest and fastest 5G rollout in the world. He highlighted the scale of Jio’s network, saying “more than 85% of the 5G radio cells operational in India are Jio’s.” He said Jio True 5G now offers the widest coverage and best quality, reaching every corner of India.
According to Ambani, this achievement has taken India from the 5G dark ages to the 5G bright age, creating one of the most advanced 5G networks in the world. He attributed the success to Jio’s unmatched spectrum holdings, 5G standalone architecture and advanced technologies such as carrier aggregation and network slicing. “Jio is the only operator in India and the first in the world to fully harness the power of 5G,” he said.
Leading the world in data usage
Ambani also shared his views on Jio’s impact on global data usage. He revealed that Jio’s average customer currently uses more than 30 GB of data per month, with data traffic growing 33% in the past year. “Jio’s network currently carries around 8% of the world’s mobile traffic, outperforming even the largest global operators, including those in developed markets,” he said. Despite this massive data load, Jio is maintaining the highest quality of service and setting new benchmarks globally.
The rapid adoption of Jio True 5G is also noteworthy: “In just two years, more than 130 million customers have adopted Jio True 5G,” Ambani said, highlighting the fastest 5G adoption rate in the world.
Ambani stressed that Jio’s journey has been driven by its own technology and has focused on innovation over consolidation. “One of the most satisfying parts of Jio’s journey is that everything we have achieved has been underpinned by our own technology. We knew from the beginning that to lead the digital revolution, we needed innovation and not just consolidation,” he said.
Jio’s success is rooted in its home-grown 5G stack and its home-grown operational support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS). Ambani highlighted Jio’s growing intellectual property portfolio, saying, “Jio is one of the largest patent holders in India, with over 350 patents in 5G and 6G technologies alone.” He said these patents are essential to keeping Jio at the forefront of global innovation.
Jio has also made great strides in digital home services and now serves about 30 million customers with digital broadband and digital television services. “This makes us one of the largest digital home service providers in the world,” Ambani said, highlighting the company’s expanding reach.
In the business space, Jio has become a trusted partner to over one million small and medium-sized enterprises across India. “We are proud to be a trusted partner to over 80% of the top 5,000 large enterprises in the country,” Ambani said, highlighting Jio’s dominance in business connectivity.
