CM Maryam Nawaz gives green light to launch free WiFi pilot project in state capital
LAHORE: With the approval of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the provincial government has launched free Wi-Fi service at 50 spots in Lahore under a pilot project.
“Free Wi-Fi has started at the following (50 spots) in Lahore city. The rest of Lahore is doing the same. Alhamdolillah! We promise, we will deliver,” CM Mariam said in the X post.
Last month, the Prime Minister ushered in the launch of a free Wi-Fi pilot project in Lahore at a high-level meeting with officials of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
According to media reports, PIBT is also tasked with rebuilding existing infrastructure, including hotspots.
This initiative aims to provide free WiFi access in various public places.
CM Maryam also directed the IT department officials to start the service preferably at educational institutions, airports, railway stations and bus stands. Free WiFi service is provided at a total of 516 locations across Lahore.
Free WiFi services in Lahore and other urban areas were launched by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in 2013. However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government shut down the service citing non-payment of bills. to your internet provider.
Initially, the Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation (PTCL) managed the service, but now it is supervised by PITB.
The expected resumption of this service will improve internet access in critical locations, thereby increasing connectivity and simplifying communication channels, bringing significant benefits to the public.
