The announcement corroborates a recent report by Moneycontrol, which suggested that BSNL plans to launch 5G by next year and the government has set an ambitious target of achieving a 25% subscriber market share for BSNL by the end of 2025.
“The deadline for a full-fledged 4G network to be available in the country is March 2025. We are aiming to introduce 5G within six to eight months,” a senior government official, who asked not to be named, was quoted as saying by the report.
BSNL currently has a market share of 7.4 percent and had 86.3 million mobile subscribers as of the end of May, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
BSNL will utilize the upcoming 4G infrastructure to 5G Technology It will compete with rival telecoms Jio and Airtel, which have already completed 5G networks across India. Moneycontrol noted that the private carriers have 108 million and 90 million 5G subscribers, respectively.
To bridge this gap, BSNL has already deployed 15,000 4G base stations across several regions, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. BSNL reportedly plans to increase this number to 80,000 by the end of October and complete deployment of 100,000 base stations by March 2025.
The government has allocated significant funds to help revive and upskill BSNL. In the 2024-25 budget, out of the total allocation of Rs 1.28 trillion to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Rs 83,416 trillion has been earmarked for BSNL.
